Aikido study and practice consists of more than just learning physical technique; proper behavior and manners are also an important part of the training. The following is an introduction to dojo etiquette, which should be a reflection of the Aikido spirit of caring for your fellow students, your dojo, your Sensei, and finally, yourself. Please use your best common sense in all aspects of courtesy and etiquette. However, the best way to learn proper behavior is by observing the behavior of Sensei (as teacher), as well as that of the senior students.
- When entering or leaving the dojo, it is proper to bow (as a tradtional show of respect) in the direction of O-Sensei's picture, the kamiza or the front of the dojo. You should also bow when entering or leaving the mat.
- Shoes are to be taken off at the entrance of the dojo and zori (sandals or thongs) worn inside. Zori should be lined up on the left side of the mat (facing outwards during class instruction).
- Be on time for class, preferably early. If you do happen to arrive late, sit quietly in seiza on the edge of the mat. Wait for the instructor to admit you to class. Once the instructor has given permission, it is proper to bow in the direction of O-Sensei's picture, the kamiza or the front of the dojo, and then bow in the direction of the instructor.
- Please turn off cell phones and pagers.
- Please remove watches, rings and other jewelry before practice.
- Please remove make-up, perfume or cologne before practice.
- Please keep your finger and toe nails cut short.
- The use of drugs or alcohol before class is strictly prohibited.
- The instructor should be referred to as "Sensei" during class instruction, and not by first name or surname.
- Carry out the directives of the instructor promptly. Do not keep the rest of the class waiting for you.
- Students must ask the instructor for permission to leave the class early or to leave the mat for any reason; common sense excludes injuries. A student should not leave the mat for a drink of water or for rest unless given permission.
- Please keep talking during class to a minimum. What conversation there is should be restricted to one topic - Aikido.
- Do not engage in rough-housing or needless contests of strength during class.
- Members sweep the mat at the end of each class.
- Avoid sitting on the mat with your back to the picture of O-Sensei or the kamiza. Also, do not lean against the walls or sit with your legs stretched out. (Either sit in seiza or cross-legged.)
- Keep your training uniform clean, in good shape, and free from offensive odors.
- Please pay your membership dues promptly. If, for any reason, you are unable to pay your dues on time, talk with the person in charge of the dues collection. Sometimes special rates are available for those experiencing financial hardship.
- Remember that you are here to learn, and not to gratify your ego. An attitude of receptivity and humility (though not obsequiousness) is therefore advised.
- Preserve common-sense standards of decency and respect at all times.
- Train in a joyful manner and with an open mind.
